FINISHES
- NATURAL FINISH: Our natural finish is a three step process. The base "sealer" coat is a standard nitrocellulose sealer. The top coats are a nitrocellulose lacquer. This is standard "water resistant" lacquer, but it is not waterproof. A wet glass will leave a water ring on this finish, but water which is quickly wiped up will do no damage.
- STAINED FINISHES: Our Honey, Sienna, Spice, and Espresso (on select pieces) are stained finishes. We use specially formulated commercial stains on our products. Honey and Spice are one step spray staining processes. Sienna is a spray and wipe stain over a toner, with the wiping process giving added depth to the grain of the ash. All stains are then covered with the same three-coat sealer and lacquer that make up our natural finish.
- PAINTED FINISHES: We offer a variety of painted finishes for our ash products. Solid white, blueberry, celery and butter creme are available on select pieces. Also some pieces are available in painted and natural or stain combinations. For example you can get a dresser with white sides, drawer fronts and natural top and knobs. Because ash is an open grained wood, when it is painted the physical structure of the wood grain will show through the paint.
Our "painted" finishes are a multi-step, high quality lacquer finish. The process involves a two-step undercoat and then a top coat of the color. The final coat is a clear coat over the top of the opaque color, The clear coat provides extra protection for the color and, if scratched slightly, does not show a difference in the finish as the color itself would. Once again this is not a waterproof finish, but is water resistant.
- CARE AND MAINTENANCE FOR ALL FINISHES: To clean, use warm water or a mild dish soap solution on a sponge or cloth. (A mild "Murphy's Oil Soap" solution will also work well.) DO NOT USE ABRASIVE CLEANSERS! To polish, use any household furniture polish which does not contain pigments. Coasters must be used under a glass and potted plants must have a waterproof saucer or liner under them.
- DRAWER BOX FINISH: We recently began using a two-step sealer and lacquer finish on our drawer boxes. This gives them a much smoother finish then ever before. Care for the drawer boxes is the same as for the rest of the furniture.
- THE FUTURE OF OUR FINISHES: The information above is accurate for the finishes that we use now. In the future, we anticipate that water-based finish technology will have developed to the point where we will make this conversion. Water-based finishes appear to present the best alternative for a more environmentally friendly future for the furniture industry, but they are not quite ready yet for our level of quality.
